Raúl presides during Naval Academy’s
55th anniversary ceremony
On October 16, a ceremony was held to commemorate
the 55th anniversary of the Granma Naval Academy’s
foundation, headed by Army General Raúl Castro Ruz,
First Secretary of the Central Committee of the
Communist Party of Cuba and President of the
Councils of State and Ministers.

At the proposal of the Minister of the Revolutionary
Armed Forces, Army General Leopoldo Cintra Frías,
the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba awarded
the Antonio Maceo Order to the Granma Naval Academy,
which was presented by Raúl.
During the ceremony, Brigade General Juan Pérez Gil,
head of the Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces
Directorate, highlighted the teaching institution’s
achievements realized over 55 years, in the
education, development, training and preparation of
Revolutionary Navy cadres and other Central State
Administration Organizations.
“Their collective work has been distinguished by
the
continuous improvement
of the educational
process; efforts made in
the formation of values; improving
the living and work conditions of personnel; as well
as its contribution to scientific and technical
development, research and contribution to the
modernization of military equipment,”
Pérez Gil
stated.
The emotions felt by teachers, researchers and
students affiliated with the institution were
expressed by young Lieutenant Commander and
Technical Sciences Phd. Liván Lazo Porta, who
reiterated the new generation of naval officers’
commitment to defending Cuba’s coasts stating, “Our
seas will first be stained with blood, before an
enemy ship disembarks on our shores. We remain ready
to adjust the sails when necessary.”
As a symbolic gesture, Director of the Granma Naval
Academy, Capitan Raúl Céspedes Enamorado, received a
certificate signed by Army General Leopoldo Cintra
Frías, Minister of the FAR, from Army General Álvaro
López Miera, first vice minister of the FAR and
chief of General Staff.
Admiral Carlos Alfonso Duque Ramos, head of the
Revolutionary Navy, emphasized the positive results
achieved by the institution in various inspections
conducted by the International Maritime Organization
and heads of MINFAR.
He also highlighted the Academy’s most recent
achievements, among them the training of naval
officers from different countries, such as Angola,
Nicaragua, Namibia and Venezuela, the preparation of
a faculty of 23 doctorates, 20 masters graduates, 29
specialists and 132 teachers, and the continuation
of a Quality Management System, certified by the
National Standards Bureau.
Also affiliated with the Academy – from which more
than 7,000 students have graduated over half a
century – are senior FAR and Ministry of the
Interior officials.
