Cuba forced to suspend consular
services in U.S.
Cuba
has been forced to suspend its consular services in
Washington, according to a communiqué released by
the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Relations, February
14.
The
text points out that Cuba’s Interests Section in
Washington refers to the communiqué issued December
9, 2013, which reported a new deadline established
by M & T Bank to terminate services provided to the
Section and Cuba’s Permanent Mission at the United
Nations. At that time, the date of March 1st, 2014,
was set as the deadline for the closing of accounts
and February 14 as the deadline to make deposits.
Despite an enormous effort, due to current
restrictions based on the U.S. government’s policy
of economic, commercial and financial blockade
against Cuba, the statement continues, it has been
impossible for the Interests Section to find a bank
based in the United States to assume the bank
accounts of Cuban diplomatic missions. For this
reason, reads the text, the Cuban Interests Section
is forced to suspend consular services on the date
of the publication of this note, until bank services
are re-established.
As
indicated in November, only cases of a humanitarian
nature will be accepted. (acn)
