Fidel sends message regarding Eugenio
George’s death
The
historic leader of the Cuban Revolution indicates in
his message to the Cuban Sports Institute (INDER)
that he read in Granma of George’s death May 30.
Eugenio George, an outstanding leader in Cuban
sports, took the nation’s women’s volleyball team to
the highest levels of this discipline
internationally.
Esteemed INDER compañeros,
I
read today in Granma that Eugenio George, the
prestigious, outstanding sports specialist who took
the Cuban women’s volleyball team to the highest
levels in the world of this sport, had died on
Saturday, and that on Sunday afternoon, family
members and admirers had accompanied his coffin to
the site where it would be buried in Colón Cemetery.
I
questioned several compañeros about the absence of a
floral wreath from myself accompanying his coffin.
I, who have always admired him greatly, did not know
of his death until several hours later.
Fraternally,
Fidel Castro Ruz
