Luis Alberto Báez Peña, commercial
manager with the Ministry of Tourism in Ciego de
Ávila, stated that the Jardines closed August with
an increase of more than 20% in the number of
visitors, to reach a total unprecedented in its 20
years of operations, during which time more than 3.5
million tourists have visited the resort.
The celebrations coincide with the
beginning of the high tourist season and took place
in the Blau Colonial hotel (formerly the Guitart-Cayo
Coco), an emblematic facility inaugurated November
12, 1993 by Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro
Ruz.
The principal actions undertaken in
the resort complex have been the opening of the
Memories Flamenco and Pestana Cayo Coco hotels;
improvements to road signage, and the inauguration
of La Gaviota commercial center to mark the
anniversary. Báez Peña noted that 40 flights are
scheduled for the high season, basically from Canada,
the United Kingdom and Argentina, the principal
market countries.
Jardines del Rey has a total of
5,500-plus rooms and 17 hotel facilities, 8.6% of
the total dedicated to the tourism industry in Cuba.
