Living longer

The Caribbean Medical Association announces the international conference "Satisfactory longevity: the biggest challenge to humans in the new century. A complete vision" taking place in Havana, April 21-25, 2003

By José A. de la Osa

.Scientists from all over the world and experts from the various disciplines of knowledge – medicine, sport, gastronomy, nutrition and the environment – are proposing to lend the lie in Havana to a well known saying by Roman thinker and famous orator Cicero on the problem of humans and aging: more suffering, more incompetence, more disease and closer to death.

On October 10, 2002, the Caribbean Medical Association (AMECA), an NGO with consultant status on the UN Economic and Social Council, launched a call for people to participate in a meeting entitled "Satisfactory longevity: the biggest challenge to humans in the new century. A complete vision." The conference will have a broad agenda favoring interdisciplinary exchanges on the most recent advances in diverse materials related to human longevity. It will serve as a contribution to knowledge on living longer and quality of life combined with a better physical appearance.

The new century’s first international meeting for human health and longevity takes place April 21-25 at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, and is intended to become a true celebration of lasting, enjoyable and secure life.

Although many experts throughout the world affirm that men and women have the potential to live up to 200 years, specialists in the field believe human beings have a higher longevity capacity than currently enjoyed; studies virtually prove that it is possible to exceed the 120 year limit.

AMECA president, Prof. Eugenio Selma-Housein Abdo told representatives of different bodies and organizations plus national and international press that Cuba was chosen as the venue because of its low infant mortality rate, increased life expectancy, internationally recognized success in sports, education and culture, and for the growing development of eco-tourism.
