Torture of Iraqi civilians by
 occupation forces

BAGHDAD, May 16.- More than 20 Iraqi civilians have been tortured by U.S. and British troops occupying that country, the EFE news agency reports.

The source states that this occurred during the aggression and its main focus was the southern city of Basra.

Speaking at a press conference, Said Boumedouha, member of an investigation team, quoted the case of a man who, according to witness statements, was given electric shocks, while others were beaten all night, and stressed that, in his view, “this could be described as torture.”

Boumedouha confirmed that everywhere he has been in Iraq he has been informed that the U.S. and British occupiers “have not done enough” to reestablish security in the country.

In Berlin, Gerhard Schroeder, the German foreign minister, told U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell that he hoped that sanctions on Iraq would soon be lifted and a solution found for the country’s future, in an attempt at rapprochement with Washington after months of differences.

In this context, Russia and China have asked for corrections to the resolution to lift sanctions on Iraq placed before the UN Security Council by the United States, while France wishes to make constructive proposals, EFE cables.
