U.S.
fines French shipping company for services to Cuba
WASHINGTON.—The United States has fined the
French shipping company CMA CGM $374,400 for
providing services to Cuba, according to the Office
of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
This office, part of the U.S. Treasury Department
and responsible for imposing the fine, accused the
French company of violating U.S. regulations on
Cuba.
This company ranks third at the international
level for container transportation, and the measure
implemented is further evidence of Washington’s
economic blockade of the island, whose effects are
in excess of $751 billion.
According to the OFAC note, the U.S. government
sued the CMA CGM subsidiary based in Norfolk,
Virginia after it accepted payment for facilitating
cargo services to Cuba. The firm also faces
violating Treasury Department regulations in
relation to Iran and Sudan.
In its note, OFAC mentions that some of the
merchandise shipped to Cuba and Iran could be
classified as agricultural products and medicaments.
