Informative note
THE CUBAPETROLEO (CUPET) Union of
Enterprises informs that drilling operations at the
Jagüey 1X exploratory oil well in Cuba’s Exclusive
Economic Zone in the Gulf of Mexico, have been
completed without results. This well was drilled by
the Repsol company as operator in the framework of a
risk exploration contract signed between CUPET and a
consortium comprising Repsol of Spain, Satoil of
Norway and ONGC of India, in a 1,778-meter area of
water with a total depth of 4,548 meters at average
sea level.
The Jagüey 1X well was the first to
be drilled in the exploratory program underway in
the Exclusive Economic Zone and the lack of results
should not in any way nullify prospects for the zone,
which covers an area of 112,000 square kilometers in
the Gulf of Mexico, one of the principal oil basins
at the global level, with a high potential for the
discovery of new hydrocarbon reserves, in according
to geological studies undertaken.
The Scarabeo 9 drilling platform
utilized in the Jagüey 1X exploration, was
transferred to the location of the Catoche 1X well
north of Pinar del Río province, where drilling
began on May 24, operated by the Malaysian PC Gulf
company. The Russian Gazpromneft company is also
participating in this risk exploration contract.
Continuing the drilling program for
the discovery of potential energy resources in the
Exclusive Economic Zone, once that work on the
Catoche 1X well is completed, the Scarabeo 9 will be
moved to the location of the Cabo de San Antonio 1X,
operated by Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA).
