Opinions of ELAM students
Why study medicine?
ARGENTINA
In
response to the fact that in our countries, doctors
are needed for the people who, because of social
inequalities, have no access to health. Also because
it is a profession that brings me closer every day
to the reality of the most disadvantaged, and I
think that ‘the head thinks where the feet walk.’
Medicine provides tools for being able to change the
current unjust system.
— Alejandro Sosa Cueto.
BOLIVIA
Because
I like the profession and it makes it possible for
me to help a lot of people who really need it, to
prevent sicknesses and deaths that especially stem
from a lack of medical attention, which is so
necessary for millions of people on our continent.
— Erika Paola Quintanilla Muñoz.
CHILE (MAPUCHE)
I see medicine as a tool and doctors as agents of
change. Now, and in Cuba, that conviction is
multiplying every day. This career was love at first
sight, and it has turned out to be so humane, more
than any other, and so perfect, to be able to know
for certain that a better world is possible. I study
out of love, because that is the way.
— Alihuen Antileo García.
ECUADOR
To serve the people who need to improve their state
of health, being part of the ‘army of white coats’
that wants good health for all, whose greatest
stimulus is the well-being of their fellow human
beings, and not the accumulation of economic
resources.
— Flavio Efraín Pozo Vargas.
UNITED STATES
In
my country, there is no justice with respect to
medical insurance or access to medical attention for
almost 70 million citizens. What other career could
I choose, when what fascinates me is science, and I
am happy when I help others? In practicing medicine,
it is possible to touch the heart of every human
being.
— Ian Fabian.
PARAGUAY
To help my community, which needs it, and so that
there is an America with more solidarity, following
the example of the Cubans.
— Jessica Eloísa Gómez Benítez.
