Interesting details
Since 2005, when the first class graduated from the
Latin American School of Medicine, 7,256 Doctors of
Medicine from 45 countries and 84 indigenous
communities have passed through this institution. In
2005 there were 1,496 graduates, 1,419 in 2006,
1,545 in 2007, 1,500 in 2008, and 1,296 in 2009. The
three countries with the highest number of graduates
to date are Honduras with 569, Guatemala with 556
and Haiti with 543. More than 2,000 graduates are
currently specializing within our national health
system. As for their social classes of origin, the
majority are from the working class, followed by
campesinos and intellectuals. The predominant
religions of students are Catholic and Evangelical.
The Latin American School of Medicine comprises 28
buildings spread over an area of more than 1 million
square meters, where students receive premedical
training and the first two years of study (covering
the basic sciences). After that they proceed to
“clinical rotations” at 13 medical universities in
Cuba. The teaching body is composed of more than
12,000 professors. In its 10 years of existence,
ELAM has been visited by 44 presidents, 8 vice
presidents, 14 prime ministers, 105 ministers, and a
further 148 important public figures. |
