Posada Carriles transferred to prison in New Mexico
EL PASO, Texas, Jan. 17—.
Terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, responsible for the
1976 attack on a Cuban airliner that killed 73
people, was transferred to a prison in New Mexico
after spending a year and a half in a Texas
detention center, according to what his lawyer told
the AFP news agency on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
“They took him, they transferred
him late yesterday (Tuesday)” to Otero County in New
Mexico (southwest United States), said Posada’s
attorney, Felipe DJ Millán, in El Paso, Texas.
The Otero County Prison, which
has a capacity of 500, holds prisoners who are in
custody of US Marshal authorities and are awaiting
transfer to other facilities or have pending
deportation orders.
Posada Carriles appeared on
Tuesday in a federal court to respond to charges on
lying to U.S. immigration authorities when he
applied for citizenship.
The criminal did not plead guilty
or innocent, and the judge ordered for him to remain
incarcerated without bail until the next hearing,
set for Friday in El Paso.
Since his arrest in Miami in May
2005, Posada Carriles has been held in an
immigration detention center in El Paso, and an
immigration court prevented him from being deported
to Venezuela, which has applied for his extradition
based on a treaty that country has had with the
United States for years.
The U.S. Attorney’s office has
brought charges against the criminal for
immigration-related fraud, but none related to his
terrorist actions. His defense attorneys are asking
for his release, and U.S. authorities have been
given until February 1 to tell the court why he
should be held indefinitely.
The U.S. Attorney’s office
opposed his release, saying that Posada Carriles is
a flight risk and a threat to the community.
