Baseball Junior Youth Championship in
Central Cuba
SANCTI Spíritus province, in central Cuba, was ready
at the close of this edition to host the Baseball
Junior World Championship from September 17 to 27
with the participation of 13 teams, according to the
organizing committee, PL reported.
José
Antonio Huelga Stadium in the city of Sancti
Spíritus, about 350 kilometers east of Havana, is
the main venue.
The
Group A teams, consisting of Cuba, South Korea,
Panama, Australia, Holland and South Africa will be
playing here.
Group B, comprised of the United States, China,
Chinese Taipei, Mexico, Canada, Italy and Spain,
will play in José Ramón Cepero Stadium in the
neighboring province of Ciego de Ávila.
It
was also reported that some of the games will be
held in the city of Santa Clara.
According to the schedule, Venezuela will be the
first team to arrive in Sancti Spíritus to train.
Likewise, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Holland and
Italy are expected to arrive before the official
competition to play against Cuba.
The
island’s team manager is the experienced Carlos
Martí, who told the national press that “the kids
are in ideal shape to win this championship.”
Some
of the most outstanding players include Dayán
Viciedo and Leonis Martín, who played well with the
Villa Clara team during the last National Series.
Martí noted that all of their training goals had
been met, with very satisfactory results.
He
also noted that the team has an excellent pitching
line-up, including Juan Yaser Serrano, Fredy Jasiel
Alvarez, Alberto Soto, Adonis Chapman and Vladimir
García, who played well in the last Cuban
championship.
That group is in the hands of former outstanding
pitcher Lázaro Valle, who said that some of them can
throw at 92-plus miles per hour.
