President of IOC begins visit to Cuba
HAVANA, October 31 (PL) —. Belgian Jacques Rogge,
president of the International Olympic Committee
(IOC) begins his second visit to Cuba today to
participate in the International Sport for All
Congress from November 1 to 3.
Rogge will attend this special event, which will
feature more than 1,000 delegates from 128 countries
who will discuss presentations on the topic
“Physical Activity: Benefits and Challenges.”
The sports official assumed the presidency of the
international body on July 16, 2001, during the
IOC’s 112th session, which was held in Moscow,
replacing Spaniard Juan Antonio Samaranch.
The eighth president of the IOC was born on May 2,
1942 in the small Belgian city of Ghent, at a time
when World War II was shaking Europe to its
foundations.
From an early age, Rogge played various sports,
sometimes just for pleasure but also with the
intention of representing his country at
international competitions.
