President of IOC begins visit to Cuba

HAVANA, October 31 (PL) —. Belgian Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) begins his second visit to Cuba today to participate in the International Sport for All Congress from November 1 to 3.

Rogge will attend this special event, which will feature more than 1,000 delegates from 128 countries who will discuss presentations on the topic “Physical Activity: Benefits and Challenges.”

The sports official assumed the presidency of the international body on July 16, 2001, during the IOC’s 112th session, which was held in Moscow, replacing Spaniard Juan Antonio Samaranch.

The eighth president of the IOC was born on May 2, 1942 in the small Belgian city of Ghent, at a time when World War II was shaking Europe to its foundations.

From an early age, Rogge played various sports, sometimes just for pleasure but also with the intention of representing his country at international competitions.
