Celebrations on the centenary of Compay Segundo’s birth

• House-Museum inaugurated in Havana

THE Compay Segundo Casa Museo (House-Museum), honoring the legendary Cuban musician, was inaugurated in Havana as part of the celebrations for the centenary of the composer of “Chan Chan.”

In a press conference at the Hotel Nacional, Salvador Repilado, Compay’s son, said that the collection to be exhibited in the museum consists of personal objects, instruments that his father used, and unpublished photographs.

Compay Segundo (1907-2003) would have been 100 years old in 2007, and his family, together with the Ministry of Culture and the Cuban Institute of Music, have organized a program of commemoration.

In addition, a visual arts exhibition titled “Compay Segundo, 100 years” is to open at the Cuban Museum of Fine Arts. That exhibition includes work by outstanding Cuban artists like Zaida del Río, Eduardo Roca “Choco,” Roberto Fabelo, Kcho, Sosabravo, and other young talents.

Likewise, a concert will be held in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba on November 18 (the birthday of the composer of “Se secó el arrollito,” with Compay Segundo’s band and the Oriente Symphonic Orchestra.

It is also expected that the 2007 Habano Festival will be dedicated to the star, who all of his life combined his profession as a tobacco worker with that of musician.

Finally, a monument is to be erected in Santa Ifigenia Cemetery — a national heritage site — in Santiago de Cuba to honor the memory of Francisco Repilado (the son musician’s real name), designed by artist Fernando López, winner of the National Architecture Award.

The monument, according to the designer in a video, will be located near the graves of Pepe Sánchez, creator of the bolero, and Miguel Matamoros, one of the most outstanding Cuban musicians in history, with whom Compay Segundo performed for 14 years.

Next December, the Compay Segundo group will tour northern Italy in a tribute organized by that European country to the legendary Cuban singer. (PL)
