Iraq massacre and
attempt to cover
it up denounced
WASHINTON, May 28 — Democratic Representative
John Murtha today denounced the Pentagon’s attempts
to cover up an alleged civilian massacre in Iraq
committed by U.S. soldiers.
In declarations to ABC television network,
the war veteran, now a U.S. legislator, accused the
military of trying to bury the case in which U.S.
soldiers are suspected to have murdered 24 Iraqi
civilians, reports PL.
Since March, when the British daily The Times
revealed the information, no one has given any
attention to what happened, indicated Murtha, a
decorated former Marine and advocate of withdrawing
the troops from Iraq.
This Saturday, CNN dedicated an ample
timeslot to reviewing the accusations by an Iraqi
child published in the British newspaper, in which
she tells how the soldiers killed her family.
The case, under investigation by authorities,
occurred in the town of Haditha, 200 kilometers
northeast of Baghdad.
Iman Hassan told the publication that U.S.
soldiers came to her house and fired point blank at
her family after a U.S. soldier, Miguel Terrazas,
20, was killed in the street.
"Everyone in the house was killed by the
Americans, except my brother Abdul Rahman and me,"
the girl said.
If the claims can be proven, the soldiers could
face charges of homicide, negligent homicide,
negligence in fulfillment of duty, and presentation
of a false report.
