THE Industriales team is to play against Santiago
de Cuba for the title of the 45th Cuban Baseball
Championship, after winning the semifinal against
Sancti Spíritus on Sunday, May 14, at José Antonio
Huelga Stadium in the city of Sancti Spíritus.
Industriales, led by manager Rey Vicente Anglada,
made it to the seventh game of the western regional
play-offs with a 3-3 tie against Sancti Spíritus,
but swept the Sunday game with an overwhelming 10-1
victory.
The Blues (Industriales) batted a total of 16
hits, including three homeruns, with players Reyes (from
5-3, two doubles and three runs), Mayeta (4-2,
homerun and five hits) and Urgellés (5-3, triple and
homerun) as the most outstanding.
This was the eighth victory for left-hander
Maicel this season, with just two losses, while the
losing pitcher was veteran right-hander Yovani
Aragón.
Now Anglada’s troops will travel to the city of
Santiago de Cuba to begin the big finale of the
championship, a confrontation that has been well-described
as the Great Cuban Baseball Classic, given the
traditional rivalry between the two teams.
The first game is set for Wednesday, May 17 at
the Guillermón Moncada Stadium, and expectations are
for a duel between right-hander Ormari Romero of the
home team led by Antonio Pacheco, and Industriales
pitcher Frank Montieth. (PL)
