MANU CHAO IN THE ANTI-IMPERIALIST TRIBUNAL
Thousands rock to insurgency music
BY PEDRO DE LA HOZ—Granma
daily staff writer—
TENS of thousands of young people wrapped
themselves around Manu Chao last night in the
concert he gave in the José Martí Anti-Imperialist
Tribunal, where the famous Spanish-French singer-songwriter
reaffirmed his commitment to insurgency and protest
songs and affirmed his strong solidarity with Cuba.
Accompanied by his band, Radio Bemba Sound System,
Manu regaled his audience with a wide-ranging
selection of his repertoire, from the essential
themes that he popularized when he was with the
group Mano Negra to his most recent songs that
accentuate his particular way of fusing popular
cultures from diverse parts of the world.
The singer wanted the ISA (Higher Institute of
Arts) Cuarteto, a group of young students who
improvised a jam session based on Cuban rhythms, to
precede him.
Flags from various Latin American countries
fluttered from the audience, as if anticipating the
upcoming stages of Manu’s current tour, which takes
him on Friday to Caracas, and a few days later, to
Bolivia, to discover and share in the Bolivarian
experience led by Hugo Chávez and the perspectives
opened with the presidential mandate of Evo Morales.
