),
to be hosted by Havana this September 11-16 was
inaugurated at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this
Wednesday, June 14.
Foreign Minister Felipe Pérez Roque took part in
the inauguration together with other senior
officials – also members of the organizing committee
for the event – during which he reiterated Cuba’s
commitment to strengthening the Movement as well as
to offer all informative and other facilities to
ensure that the meeting is a success.
One of the most important activities during the
entire preparatory period for the 14th Summit is
precisely the creation of this site which at the
same time is linked to others on the subject and
which can be accessed in Spanish, English and French.
It will also serve to give information on activities
related to the summit and also to Cuba’s presidency
of the NAM when it assumes those functions in
September for a three-year term.
The new website provides antecedents, official
documents and speeches, communiqués and a wide-ranging
gallery of unpublished photos with digital support,
and other aspects linked to the history and future
of that important and necessary group of nations
(116 to date).
In the final part of the inauguration Perez Roque
also participated in a debate forum in conjunction
with Deputy Foreign Ministers Abelardo Moreno and
Manuel Aguilar, in which they responded on line to a
large number of questions on the subject from
surfers.
"We believe that this site is a tremendous
challenge not only for what it has involved in the
stage at which we find ourselves now but in what it
will involve in terms of keeping it up to date,
constantly updated with all information of interest
for PAM members," explained Moreno in the opening
words.
"In our judgment," he added, "this site has a
double value: informative and political, because it
is where member nations are going to visit to seek
information on what is going on, what the meetings
are, what the latest news is, the decisions and also
because it will serve Cuba in circulating the
activities it will organize in its aim of
revitalizing the Movement, and consistently
strengthen it so that it once again becomes a
significant force in current international relations,
as well as to promote its guiding principles and
their objectives.
The deputy minister went on to explain that, via
the website, the Foreign Ministry can take forward a
series of practical measures such as those announced
a few days ago by the president in terms of
cooperation among the NAM member countries, which
will really guarantee that the Cuban presidency will
be a vital element as much for the Movement in its
entirety as for each and every one of the countries
that it represents.
