A historic journey with Che
• Omar Fernández Cañizares’
book to be launched at
the Havana Book Fair
FROM
June 12 to September 9, Comandante Ernesto
Che Guevara made a tour of Asia, Europe and Africa,
basically aimed at stating the objectives of the
Cuban Revolution that had triumphed in January of
that year.
Captain Omar Fernández Cañizares, who also
participated in that extensive tour as second chief
of the delegation, is launching his book Un viaje
histórico con el Che (A Historic Voyage with Che,
Ciencias Sociales Publishers) at this year’s edition
of the Havana Book Fair.
“The
book recounts all the countries visited and the
figures with whom Che met, as well as 50 photos
taken during the tour,” its author explained.
Che’s itinerary took him to the United Arab Republic
(Egypt and Syria), Sudan, Morocco, India, Burma
(Myanmar), Japan, Indonesia, Ceylon (Sri Lanka),
Pakistan, Spain and Yugoslavia and its six
republics.
Among the principal interviews the author highlights
those with Nasser, Nehru, Tito and Sukarno.
For
the information of its readers, Ciencias Sociales
recalls that Omar Fernández Cañizares began his
revolutionary life in 1956 as a student leader at
the Santiago de Cuba Secondary Education Institute
and later was president of the Faculty of Medicine
at the University of Havana at a time when José
Antonio Echeverría was president of the Federation
of University Students (FEU).
During the struggle against the Batista
dictatorship, Fernández Cañizares arrived in the
Sierra Maestra in a plane with weapons in the FEU
Operation and obtained the rank of Captain of the
Rebel Army.
After the triumph of the Revolution he held many
responsibilities, including director general of the
Havana Customs, a member of the FAR operative group
led by Che in Pinar del Río, rearguard chief in the
cleansing of the Escambray, deputy minister of light
industry, minister of transport, chief of Medical
Services in Cabinda, Angola, and exports director at
the Ministry of Foreign Trade.
Un viaje histórico con el Che
is to be launched on February 10 in the José Antonio
Portuondo Room at the San Carlos de la Cabaña
Fortress.
