From today,
books invade the west

FROM
this Monday to Sunday, February 19, Cuba’s 15th
International Book Fair moves from its headquarters
to the cities of western Cuba, Pinar del Río,
Consolación del Sur, Sandino, Nueva Gerona, San
Antonio de los Baños, Artemisa, San José de las
Lajas, Matanzas, Cárdenas and Colón.
During
the capital stage 500,000 people visited the venue,
more than 700,000 copies were sold and sales in
national currency were in excess of five million
pesos. Next year’s Book Fair has Argentina as its
guest country of honor and is dedicated to César
López and Eduardo Torres Cuevas.
In the final session of the literary fiesta in
the Morro-Cabaña Park, presided over by Culture
Minister Abel Prieto; Oroel Sánchez, president of
the Cuban Book Institute (ICL); poetess Nancy
Morejón, to whom this festival is dedicated along
with Angel Augier; and Adán Chávez, ambassador of
Venezuela, the guest of honor country on this
occasion, the outstanding exhibitors were announced.
Fernando León Jacomino, vice president of the ICL,
stated that the Best National Stand category
included the City Historian’s Office, Casa Editora
Abril and Territorial Joint System Editions,
respectively. Foreign exhibitors distinguished were
the German language publications of Germany,
Switzerland and Austria; the U.S. Pathfinder press
and the Argentine CLACSO.
