British premier interrogated
LONDON, December 14.—British
Prime Minister Tony Blair was interviewed today by
Scotland Yard in the context of an investigation
into donations to his party in exchange for
peerages, which has submerged Labourism in an
internal crisis.
According to ANSA the police
interrogation, the first of a prime minister in the
country’s history, seeks to determine if Blair
appointed individuals to the House of Lords in
return for donations to his Labour Party.
The British police are
investigating whether the governing party received
secret payments of millions of dollars prior to the
May 2005 elections, in which Labourism obtained its
third consecutive victory.
A Downing Street spokesperson
stated that Blair was not interviewed under caution,
nor was he accompanied by a lawyer.
According to the spokesman, the
interrogation lasted two hours and took place after
the weekly meeting of Cabinet ministers in Blair’s
Downing Street residence.
Meanwhile, the Conservative
party, also being investigated for donations
received, decided not to make any comment.
