Attacks leave 15 dead and dozens
of Iraqis injured

BAGHDAD, December 20 (PL) —. After several days of relative calm, the capital awoke today under the effects of two car-bomb attacks that left at least 15 dead and dozens of injured.

One of the actions occurred on one of the main capital boulevards, when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a car loaded with explosives.

The explosion took place in the Al Jadidirya neighborhood, and was aimed at a Ministry of the Interior post adjoining the University of Baghdad.

According to police reports, 11 deaths had been reported, four of them of police officers and the rest civilians, while 30 were injured, including some university students.

Another attack occurred north of the capital, when a car blew up near a government building containing offices of the Department of Citizenship and Passports, leaving four dead and seven injured, according to witnesses.

While it has not yet been publicly announced, authorized media agencies here revealed that new U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has arrived in Iraq to inspect the war’s progress on the ground.

Diverse sources agreed that his mission would be to find new elements for facilitating a redesigned strategy for the Arab nation.
