Deputies acknowledge skills and insufficiencies of
the Housing Program
BY MARIA JULIA MAYORAL AND RAISA PAGES—Granma daily
staff writers—
FROM September 2005 to this past
November, the execution of the current Housing
Program in Cuba recorded costs of 292 million in
hard currency solely in terms of materials, fuel and
domestic transportation, which made it possible to
complete some 110,000 homes this year.
During this 15-month period,
508,000 tons of cement, 29,000 of steel, 34,000
cubic meters of timber, 124,000 bathroom fittings,
132,000 units of hydraulic and sanitation equipment,
78,000 metallic window units, 156,000 doors and
54,000 metallic roofs – among other resources – were
directed to the construction, rehabilitation and
conservation of homes. Overall, all those materials
were of better quality than those used previously.
That supports the tremendous
economic and financial effort made by the leadership
of the Revolution, affirmed yesterday deputies to
the National Assembly of People's Power who, while
not failing to acknowledge the advances, focused on
the insufficiencies that are currently holding back
the abovementioned investment process.
The debate in the International
Conference Center took place with the participation
of Carlos Lage, secretary of the Executive Committee
of the Council of Ministers; and Ricardo Alarcón,
Jaime Crombet and Ernesto Suárez, president, vice
president and secretary, respectively, of the
National Assembly. Also present were Fidel Figueroa,
minister of construction, and Víctor Ramírez, who
heads up the National Housing Institute.
