Deadly bombing shakes Baghdad: dozens killed
BAGHDAD (PL).— An attack that
left close to 60 people dead in Iraq’s capital,
according to initial estimates, in a situation where
chaos has taken over and neither the government nor
foreign troops seem to be in a position to control
the situation.
Preliminary investigations
determined that the action was planned using a
car-bomb and a suicide commando that traveled in a
truck; both devices exploded simultaneously.
The police announced 45 dead and
150 injured, but independent sources affirm that 57
people were killed, seven of them policemen, and 145
injured.
According to police, a suicide
commando attracted several day laborers around their
truck, offering them work for the day, a typical
activity in Plaza Tayaran, where the attack took
place.
The national news media reported
dozens of bodies were lying around the plaza,
covered with paper and awaiting the arrival of
vehicles that would transport them to the morgue to
be identified by their relatives.
Police also said that several
businesses were considerably damaged by the
magnitude of the explosions.
Meanwhile, a presidential
spokesman affirmed today that deposed Iraqi
President Saddam Hussein would be executed “in an
expedite way, and his remains buried in a
non-identified place,” as soon as the death sentence
handed down several days ago is ratified.
Two further individuals, Barzan
al Tikriti and Awad al Banda, collaborators of
Hussein, were also condemned to death in the trial,
convicted on charges related to the killing of
dozens of people in the city of Dujail, in southern
Iraq.
