Nine U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq
BAGHDAD, Dec. 4 (PL) —. The number of U.S. troops
killed in Iraq rose this weekend to 2,900 with the
deaths of nine of them on Saturday and Sunday,
according to information from the occupation forces’
central command on Monday.
With their deaths, 10 U.S. soldiers were killed in
Iraq during the first four days of December, and the
average rate (2.5) remains similar to that of the
previous month, when 70 of their troops were killed.
If this tendency continues, it is highly probable
that the year will end with 3,000 dead – even more
than in similar periods previous to March 2003, when
the invasion and subsequent occupation began.
Of the total killed, six died on Saturday, three of
them in direct clashes with the Iraqi resistance and
the rest victims of roadside bombs.
Five of the U.S. troops fell in the turbulent
province of Al Anbar and a sixth near Taji, in the
north, according to a military report.
The day before, one of the soldiers was killed
during an operation in Baghdad when he was hit by
shots from the insurgency, and two more died in
Tikrit, in the north, when their vehicle hit a
homemade bomb, which also injured two more soldiers.
After several days, the U.S. command has confirmed
the death of one of its pilots, whose plane crashed
on November 27 as he was providing backup to ground
troops in a firefight with resistance forces. The
cause of the crash was still under investigation.
