Eighth change of power in UN

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 14 — Former South Korean
Foreign Minister Ban Ki Moon is to be sworn in today
as the eighth UN secretary general in a ceremony
that will also pay tribute to Kofi Annan for his 10
years in that post.
The veteran Ghanaian diplomat is to be replaced by
the South Korean Ban on the first day of the new
year, amidst expectations regarding the new
projections of the international institution after
the change in leadership.
Ban, whose country was created on territory occupied
by U.S. troops under the banner of the UN during the
war on the Korean Peninsula, has expressed his
gratitude for that, and has said that he “feels at
home” at the UN headquarters in New York.
At 62 years old, Ban has played an outstanding
diplomatic role in relations between South Korea and
the United States via his services in Seoul’s
embassy in Washington, and as general director for
U.S. affairs in his country’s Ministry of Foreign
Affairs.
The former South Korean former minister will be
sworn in before the ambassadors of the UN’s 192
member states, who will first pay tribute to Annan
for his two consecutive five-year mandates at the
head of the UN.
