Raúl leads event commemorating the Battle of Ideas

BY VENTURA DE JESUS – Granma daily staff writer –

CARDENAS.— The extraordinary reach and transformational power of revolutionary ideas put into practice in recent years with Fidel’s encouragement, were channeled on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at an event here with the presence of Raúl Castro, second secretary of the Party.

The General of the Army and minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) presided over the celebration of the 7th anniversary of the Battle of Ideas, a process born in the heat of the struggle by our people for the return of young Elián González to his homeland, and which now shows significant progress, fundamentally in the social and cultural spheres.

As is now customary, the commemoration ceremony coincided with the women’s march, a parade by the Federation of Middle School Students (FEEM), and festivities for Elián’s birthday (13), for whom the Cuban people feel a special sympathy and have always followed his progress.

At the ceremony, held at the “Flag City’s” movie theater, where those present included Juan Miguel Gonzalez and his family as well as relatives of the Cuban Five and other distinguished guests, Raúl presented a certificate of recognition to the Museum of the Battle of Ideas, which was received by its director, Rolando Govantes.

The Cuban vice president also presented certificates to four outstanding teachers in different educational levels, and a group of Pioneers presented certificates to the 45 most outstanding teachers in the city.

Pioneer Claudia Díaz Pérez, general integral junior high teacher Reinier García Gómez and Patria Flechilla, national president of the FEEM, praised the efforts started seven years ago by the country’s top leadership to provide the Cuban people with equality that goes beyond laws, as the only way to achieve the same opportunities for all.

“We are committed to continuing this beautiful and just project,” Claudia said.

Mercedes López Acea, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Party, took a brief look back at the origins of the Battle of Ideas, and the wealth of benefits it has created to date, noting that any attempt to describe or sum up what has been done throughout these years would be impossible and incomplete. The projects have had their impact little by little, and today form an extensive structure that is perfectly coordinated, comprising more than 200 social programs nationwide.

With the purpose of satiating the permanent curiosity and concern of the people, she said that Elián is doing well in school, gets good grades and is an example of a good attitude, modesty and simplicity.

She concluded that the greatest challenge today is to continue joining together in creating our immediate and future reality, and to strengthen the Revolution so that every day, our president may be the happiest of revolutionaries.

Others attending the event included Ricardo Alarcón, president of the National Assembly of People’s Power and Yadira García Vera, member of the Political Bureau, as well as Víctor Gaute, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee, and Rolando Alfonso Borges, Otto Rivero, Julio Martínez, Míriam Yanet and Ignacio Gómez, among others.
