Iraq commission warns that the
situation is serious and deteriorating
Another 10 U.S. soldiers are killed
WASHINGTON, December 6.— The strategy of President
George W. Bush in Iraq “is not working,” according
to a special commission this Wednesday in an plain
and simple evaluation that also urges the government
to adopt diplomacy in order to stabilize the country
and allow the withdrawal of the majority of troops
by the beginning of 2008, reported AP.
After almost four years of war and the deaths of
more than 2,900 U.S. soldiers, and hundreds of
thousands of Iraqi civilians, the commission warned
that the situation is serious and deteriorating,
explaining that the United States’ capacity for
influencing events in Iraq is dwindling.
The
report says that Bush must place his mistrust to one
side and include Syria, Iran and the leaders of
insurgent groups in the negotiations over the future
of Iraq, as well as urging him to take up active
steps to achieve a widening of the peace process in
the Middle East. Without significant change, it
warns, the situation will descend into chaos.
Ten
U.S. soldiers died today during fighting or as the
result of a bomb explosion in Iraq, announced
military sources, according to EFE.
In a
communiqué circulated by the Pentagon, Lieutenant
Colonel Christopher Garver confirmed that four
incidents took place in which U.S. military forces
registered a total of ten fatal casualties, without
giving any further details.
BLAIR REITERATES GATES’ OPINION
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Anthony Blair –
who has left for Washington to meet with President
George W. Bush – admitted that the United States is
not winning the war in Iraq, reiterating the opinion
of Robert Gates, who was recently appointed as U.S.
Secretary of Defense.
