More than 500
journalists apply to
cover NAM Summit
UP until this Saturday more than 500 Cuban and
foreign journalists have applied for accreditation
to cover the 14th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement
(NAM), from September 11 through 16 in Havana.
José Luis Ponce, director of the International
Press Center, told the National Information Agency (AIN)
that this total could increase in the next few days.
Ponce said that 104 of the total applications are
foreign correspondents from 36 countries permanently
accredited in Cuba, while a further 200 belong to
national press agencies.
He added that to date there have been 250
applications from 25 countries to cover the
important Third World meeting, taking place in
Havana for the second time. The Cuban capital was
the venue for the 6th NAM Summit in 1979.
Less than one month before the 14 NAM Summit,
Cuba is finalizing the protocol and logistic aspects
of the conference, which delegations from the 116
member states are expected to attend, PL notes.
A few days ago, the island presented the draft
Final Declaration of the summit to the NAM
Coordination Bureau at its headquarters in the UN in
New York.
The document, handed over to representatives of
the member countries, covers central aspects of the
current international situation at a juncture when
positions must be taken in the face of a U.S.
foreign policy based on force and threats.
