Cuba: only unbeaten team
Venezuela beats United States
THE Cuban national baseball selection finished the
first round of the Pre-Olympic Tournament of the
Americas as the only unbeaten team, after trouncing
Ecuador 15-1 on Wednesday night, August 30.
The home team thus knocked the South American team
out of the competition.
The game at the Latinoamericano Stadium in Havana
went by quickly, as the Cubans racked up two runs in
the first inning after a walk and a homerun by
Michel Enríquez.
The winners hit four more homers, two by Frederich
Cepeda and one each by Eriel Sánchez and Alexei
Ramírez, the latter with the bases loaded. The
Cubans’ total of 12 hits also include a triple and a
double.
Ecuador’s only run was due to a defense error,
marked up to pitcher Dennis Suárez, who in five
innings allowed six hits and struck out 10.
Yadier Pedroso and Jonder Martínez finished the
other two innings without allowing any hits.
In
other developments, Venezuela beat the United States
12-9 in their Group B game.
The
Venezuelans came out fighting from below on more
than one occasion to finally take the victory, their
second in the tournament, and both in extra innings.
With these results, the Venezuelan team was fourth
in its group, but according to manager Henry Campos,
“something is better than nothing, and at least we
have the possibility of continuing to work toward
our goals.” (PL)
