Humala in the
lead for second round
LIMA, April 9.—Nationalist candidate Ollanta
Humala gained the highest number of votes in the
Peruvian elections, according to exit polls, which
also show a close duel between former president Alan
García with 24.5%, and Flores with 24.2% according
to Apoyo, one of the most important polling agencies
in Peru, when voting closed, an AFP cable
notes.

Other pollsters also estimate that Humala
obtained the most votes among the three contenders
and place the other two in second place, with
minimal difference between them.
Meanwhile, Humala was the object of aggression
when dozens of his detractors converged on the
polling station where he and his wife Nadine Heredia
were casting their votes, breaking windows and
throwing objects while yelling obscenities.
Despite qualifying these incidents as "very
serious," Moisés Benamor, deputy director of the
Organization of American States observer mission,
told EFE that this was an "isolated incident."
In a situation of total chaos, Humala, who waited
nearly two hours to leave the voting station located
in the Ricardo Palma University, in a middle class
neighborhood, had to be protected by the
international observers and crowd control forces.
