486TH ANNIVERSARY OF
HAVANA
The
Saratoga, another jewel of the city
• Tourism tops 2 million •
Renovation of Martí Theater begins
BY MIGUEL
COMELLAS
THE Saratoga Hotel, improved and with all the
technology and comfort of modern life, located at
the intersection of the capital’s central Paseo
del Prado and Dragones Street, was reopened on the
486th anniversary of Havana and the eve of passing
the two-million tourists mark.
Diagonally opposite the emblematic Havana
Capitol, the five-star hotel has 96 rooms, of
which seven are suites, and rooms for disabled
guests.
Gathered at the reopening were Manuel Marrero,
minister of tourism; foreign and Cuban business
representatives; and participants in the expansion
and renovation such as artists, journalists, among
other guests.
City Historian Eusebio Leal recalled the
hotel’s history that dates back to the 1920’s and
30’s and the personalities in the world of art and
literature, among others, who have visited it. He
congratulated those who made this dream of
recuperation and beauty possible.
Leal also made reference to the ambiance of the
Hotel Saratoga, surrounded by historic capital
sites, such as Parque de la Fraternidad, the
beautiful India or Nobel Havana fountain, the
Concepción Arenal school located in a structure
built in the early 1900’s, and the above-mentioned
Capitol. He also commented on the initiation of
restoration works on the old Martí Theater, which
will bring its enchantment back to Havana
residents.
The Saratoga belongs to the HABAGUANEX, S.A.
group, created to restore the old areas of the
city to offer residents and tourists an area full
of memories and beauty. However, that task has
already gone beyond its original intended area
with restorations and modifications reaching to
the Malecón and buildings and parks along the
northern coast of Havana.
Its 164 workers average 34 years, 40% of them
are women and all have a high educational level
that will bring cheer and splendor back to the new
Saratoga.
ACTIVITIES FOR THE 486TH ANNIVERSARY

until November 25.
As is traditional, the Central Gala took place
on the evening of November 16 in Plaza Vieja in
the city’s historical quarter, declared a World
