CUBADISCO AWARDS
Grand Prize goes to
Civilización,

CUBADISCO 2005 began by clearing away the mystery
surrounding the selected albums. On this occasion,
24 categories were awarded. The Grand Prize went to
the CD Civilización (Civilization) by X
Alfonso (Unicornio label), which also received the
awards for fusion, rap/dance/hip hop and video clip.
Loco por mi Habana (Crazy for my Havana), by
Manolito Simonet y su Trabuco (EGREM), took the
prize for contemporary dance music, and the one for
producer of the year went to musician Joaquín
Betancourt.
For the first time, the most important
competition of Cuban recorded music awarded prizes
in the category of rock, which went to the group
Tendencia (from Pinar del Río province) for their
album Rebeldes, and in DVD, to Yusa live
at Ronnie Scott (Tumi Music).
In compilation, the honors went to the CD La
Rumba soy yo II (I am the Rumba II), various
artists (Bis Music), which also received the award
for sleeve notes (Cary Diez and Miguel Barnet).
The soundtrack award went to Suite Habana,
by Edesio Alejandro (ICAIC); Ángel y Habanera,
by Liuba María Hevia (Unicornio), took the award for
song, and Despecha’o, by David Blanco (Bis
Music), took pop-fusion.
In traditional music, the award went to Suenan
los cueros (The Drums are Sounding) by Osdalgia
(Lusáfrica); vocal-instrumental music and first
album went to El piano que llevo dentro (The
Piano I have Inside) by Daniel Amat and guests
(Colibrí), and Amor y piano (Love and Piano),
various (EGREM) took the jazz award.
Homo Ludens, by maestro Leo Brouwer (Colibri)
received the chamber music and recording award;
concert soloist went to Disco de oro (Golden
Album), by Jorge Luis Prats (EGREM); trova went to
Luna trovera (Trova Moon), by Augusto Blanca
(Colibrí), and folklore went to ¿Dónde andabas
tú, acereko? (Where Were You Going, acereko?),
by Rumberos de Cuba (EGREM).
In vocal music, the award went to Novel voz
(New Voice), by Novel voz (EGREM); design went to
Tomás Miña, for Corazonero, by Buena Fe (EGREM);
anthology went to La bolita (The Little Ball),
by Augusto Enríquez (EGREM).
The jury awarded special prizes to Colección
el gran tesoro de la música, Vol. 1 al VIII (The
Great Treasury of Music Collection, vol. 1-8) by
various (EGREM); Rosita Fornés Vol. I y II (EGREM)
and Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi, Esteban
Salas, Ars Longa (Historian’s Office).
Honorary Awards were bestowed on Japanese
musicians Antonio Koga, Ryu Murakami, Coro Roppongi,
Toko Cuban Boys, Toru Arima and the Noche Cubana
band, and the Japan Foundation; and for Cuba, to
musicologist María Teresa Linares. |
