More than 700 women candidates for
municipal governments
More
than 700 Cuban women are hoping to become members of
the People’s Power municipal assemblies at the end
of the first five days of meetings to elect local
government members that are taking place throughout
Cuba.
According to Roberto Díaz Sotolongo, president of
the National Electoral Commission (CEN), the 715
nominees represent more than a quarter of the
candidates who have been nominated and selected by
their neighbors.
The
official commented that the number of women aspiring
to play a role in the municipal governments looks
set to increase on account of the fact that there
are thousands of women who possess the abilities and
virtues to assume such a responsibility.
Cuba, he recalled, occupies seventh position
worldwide in terms of female presence in national
parliaments.
On
the island, propaganda campaigns such as those used
in other nations are prohibited and the candidates
are not proposed or promoted by any organization or
party.
Nevertheless, the voters are aware of the
candidates’ virtues thanks to personal biographies
which go on display in central locations in every
constituency.
Moral and human merits are denoted, as well as
details of a candidate’s professional work history,
their sense of belonging and community spirit, as
well as their willingness to change in order to
improve the quality of life of the population.
As
part of the current electoral process in Cuba, 2,485
of the 41,581 scheduled assemblies have already
taken place, whilst the number of registered voters
is 8,174,859, reported the CEN president. (PL) |
