Maneuvers by the defense
Terrorist Posada Carriles’ trial
postponed
DALLAS.— Today, an immigration
judge in El Paso, Texas postponed until next month
the hearing to decide whether terrorist Luis Posada
Carriles has the right to be released on bail whilst
his immigration trial is being considered, reported
Notimex.
In what has been seen as
maneuvers on the part of Posada Carriles’ defense
team to win time in the face of internal and
international pressure on the government of the
United States, Judge William Lee Abbott agreed to
postpone the hearing – which had been scheduled for
this Friday – until next July 25.
The judge’s decision was
announced after Eduardo Soto, the criminal’s defense
lawyer, requested last Wednesday that the hearing be
postponed for 30 days with the aim of having more
time to review documents related to the case.
Soto has stated that some of the
information contained in those documents is
inadmissible and has also asked the judge to
prohibit their use, stating that the sources are
either unidentified or dead or originate from press
reports.”
Following his detention, Posada
Carriles was taken to the US Customs and Immigration
Office detention center in El Paso, where he has
been residing in comfort ever since.
Judge Abbott set the start of the
immigration trial for next August 29 and, last week,
rejected a request by the defense to transfer the
trial to a Florida court.
