Protests in El
Salvador to demand Posada’s extradition to Venezuela
GROUPS of demonstrators belonging to the "People’s
Social Bloc" and members of the Farabundo Martí
National Liberation Front (FMLN) rallied outside the
US Embassy in El Salvador to protest against the
possible extradition to this country of Cuban-born
terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, accused of
participating in the sabotage of a passenger plane.
Representing the FMLN at the rally were Medardo
González, Shafick Handall and Nidia Díaz, who
marched together with another group of people from
the well-known Basilica of Guadalupe in Old
Cuscatlán, Libertad province, to nearby the US
Embassy.
Nidia Díaz, FMLN deputy in the Central American
Parliament, affirmed that they were taking a letter
to the embassy addressed to US President George W.
Bush to request that Posada Carriles not be
extradited to El Salvador, but rather to Venezuela,
where he should be registered as a citizen of that
country and where the government is seeking to put
him on trial.
For his part, Deputy Schafik Handal said that the
crimes that Posada Carriles is accused of in
Venezuela are more severe than those indicated in El
Salvador, which is why if he is extradited to this
country, there is a greater probability that he will
be set free.
If he is extradited to El Salvador, he would not
be accused of the crime of terrorism, but of using a
false identity, which would allow him to be set
free.
