Demonstrators
protest outside White House for Posada Carriles’
extradition
A group of demonstrators protested outside the
White House yesterday to demand the extradition of
Luis Posada Carriles to Venezuela and to denounce
the double standard being applied by the United
States in its war on terrorism.
"We hope that there is more awareness among the
people about this double standard, which has been
fed, in part, by the silence on the part of the US
media in this case," said Macrina Cárdenas of the
Mexico Solidarity Network, according to Notimex.
The demonstrators, who carried signs demanding
Posada’s extradition, remained for more than an hour
outside the presidential residence under an
inclement sun, shouting slogans against the
terrorist. The group was closely watched by several
Secret Service agents, as well as a unit from the
Fire Department.
The Network is one of the ANSWER coalition groups
that took part in the Monday demonstration, while
there were similar actions in another 15 cities
around the country, including El Paso, Texas.
The protests coincided with a court hearing in
the latter city, in which Posada appeared before an
immigration judge.
Cárdenas affirmed that if the United States
ignores Venezuela’s request, its credibility in the
war on terrorism would be seriously questioned, "and
part of our presence here is to express that
possibility."
