Venezuela presents
formal request for Posada Carriles’ extradition
WASHINGTON, June 15 – This Wednesday, Venezuela
presented its formal request to the US State
Department for the extradition of terrorist Luis
Posada Carriles, announced Bernardo Alvarez,
Venezuelan ambassador in Washington, according to
Notimex.
"Today we have presented the formal extradition
application for Posada Carriles, who was detained on
May 17 for having illegally entered the United
States," Alvarez said during a press conference.
AFP noted that the government of Hugo Chávez
asked for the process to begin immediately.
Caracas is accusing Posada Carriles, born in Cuba
and a naturalized Venezuelan citizen, of qualified
homicide for the terrorist attack on a Cuban
airliner in 1976 that left 73 people of various
nationalities dead.
For its part, the Nicaraguan National Assembly
stated that the United States should extradite the
notorious terrorist to Venezuela.
Nicaraguan deputies approved a resolution of
support for the murderer to be tried by the
Venezuelan courts for the mid-flight destruction of
a Cuban passenger plane
