Fidel
receives Luo Gan, leader of the Communist Party of
China
• The Asian country formalizes
a 50-million Yuan credit to the island
• PRESIDENT Fidel Castro received and had talks
with Luo Gan, member of the Permanent Committee of
the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, on
Tuesday, December 20 at the Palace of the Revolution.
The discussions included the excellent relations
between the two socialist nations.
Also present in China’s delegation were Wang
Jiarui, director of the International Department of
the Central Committee of the Party; Wang Shengjun,
general secretary of the Political-Juridical
Commission of the Central Committee; Zhao Rongxian,
ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in
Cuba; Ma Wenfu, deputy director of the International
Department of the Central Committee, and Zhang
Xinfeng, deputy minister of Public Security.
Attending for Cuba was José Ramón Machado Ventura
and Carlos Lage Dávila, members of the Political
Bureau and vice presidents of the Council of State;
Felipe Pérez Roque, minister of Foreign Affairs;
Carlos Valenciaga, member of the Council of State;
Fernando Remírez de Estenoz, head of the Foreign
Relations Department of the Central Committee, and
Francisco Soberón, minister-president of the Central
Bank of Cuba.
The Chinese leader also met with Carlos Lage,
when both of them chaired the signing of an economic
and technical cooperation agreement via which China
has authorized a credit line of 50 million Yuan to
Cuba for the supply of general materials.
DECORATION AT THE UNIVERSITY
Cuban and Chinese students offered a masse,
affectionate, and fraternal reception to Luo Gan
when he visited the University of Havana and took a
solemn moment to present the esteemed guest with a
Commemorative Plaque honoring the 270 Anniversary of
that place of higher learning.
There, at the Aula Magna, Rector Juan Vela
emphasized that Luo Gan was worthy of the award as
it is a symbol of fraternity and solidarity toward
Cuba. Prior to that, he recounted the history of the
center, explained the educational programs that
extend university studies to Cuba’s municipalities
and underlined the ever-combative attitude of
students in the revolutionary struggle.
During his tour of places of interest at the
University, Luo Gan spoke with Chinese students
studying Spanish and Cuban students learning Chinese,
as well as with their professors.
Afterward, the Chinese delegation visited the
Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center, where
they were hosted by the center’s director, Luis
Herrera.
