Bail Denied to Cuban-Born Terrorists Jailed in US

WASHINGTON, December 10 (RHC--PL).-- Miami Judge James Cohn has denied bail to Cuban terrorists Santiago Alvarez and Osvaldo Mitat, accused of possessing an arsenal of military weapons and firearms. The judge said the weapons were highly dangerous and had no use other than"hurting people."

Santiago Alvarez, 64, is known to have a close relationship with fugitive from Venezuelan justice Luis Posada Carriles, who is currently enjoying protection by U.S. authorities. Local media sources report that Alvarez is part of a group that helped Posada illegally enter the U.S. on one of his boats.

Alvarez and Mitat have been charged with seven counts of possession of illegal weapons, including machine guns, grenades and launchers, as well as equipment for detonating explosives.

Right-wing groups in southern Florida are protesting a prosecution motion to hold the trial outside of Miami. Prosecution sources say Fort Lauderdale or another city would be preferable.

Alvarez and Mitat are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday in Miami.
