Fifty-six dead after U.S. bombings in Iraq
BAGHDAD, August 30 (PL)—According
to initial reports, 56 people were killed after U.S.
planes bombed alleged shelters for Al Qaeda along
Iraq’s border with Syria.
The air strikes were
directed at a number of houses in the city of Al
Qaim, 450 kilometers west of Baghdad, according to
reports published here.
A hospital source in Al Qaim
said that the dead included many children and women,
but did not specify the number of people injured.
Details of the action
offered by U.S. military sources noted that during
the attack, four so-called precision-guided bombs
were dropped against “three terrorist hiding places”
and another two on a house occupied by the head of
Al Qaeda in that city, Abu Islam, who was reported
killed.
According to the source, six
bombs were dropped on buildings used by the group’s
chief and his men.
During the first attack,
four bombs were dropped, and another two later,
against a target in the town of Hasbaya, six
kilometers from Karabila.
An unspecified number of
injured people were taken to hospital in Al Rumadi,
on the east side.
Witnesses said that the
hospital was overflowing and that many people were
left homeless after their houses were literally
demolished by the bombings.
