DURING this week, we have received
numerous messages from Mexico related to the
controversial decision of that country’s government
to reduce diplomatic relations with Cuba to a
business attaché level. And here are some of their
opinions.
Mario Alberto Guerrero, of Naucalpan,
Mexico, wants to express his solidarity with and
support for the Cuban government and people. "I am
an informed and aware citizen who has witnessed the
pathetic way that the PAN-ist Fox government has
formed its domestic and foreign policy; I regret the
events of recent weeks. I’m opposed not only to
breaking off relations with the Cuban government,
but also to the subjugation to the United States by
this political class that has assaulted power in
Mexico, and to the performance of its administration
of the country’s domestic affairs."
Ramón Rubio Sosa of Mexico asks
whether television coverage was also given to the
responses of Mexico’s secretaries of the interior
and foreign affairs to Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe
Pérez Roque’s press conference, and whether "it is
not vitally important that the (Cuban) people know
of the two versions in order to have a more informed
point of view."
I would like to let you know, that
in spite of the fact that your question is
rhetorical, given that the second part responds to
the first, unfortunately, you don’t answer it. I
should inform you that Cubans have been fully
informed about what has happened during this
controversy, about what has been said by both
parties, and not just on television, but via all the
media.
Gustavo de la Rosa and José Manuel
García, young Mexicans, if you like, we will publish
your letter addressed to the Cuban president in this
section, and in that way, not just Fidel but all
readers will have access to it.
Alma Rosa Mireles says she traveled
to our country in 1999, and at the moment is "indignant
and very angry" with her government because of its
statements. "This government that we have thinks
that we’re stupid, and that we don’t see all the
political moves behind this affair...Cuban should
rest assured that millions of Mexicans do not agree
with this decision, that our government boasts about
"respecting human rights," but when has it ever
asked us our opinion about relations with you?"
Another reader, Ursula Romo, says,
"I not only want to disassociate myself with the
actions by the current government in my country, but
also reiterate to you my admiration for you as an
independent nation, an example of solidarity,
dignity and consistency... neither the PAN (National
Action Party) nor Fox are Mexico; my country is much
more than this government. Neither I nor many
Mexicans feel that he represents us."
From the state of Morelos, Cecilia
Elsa González, Cecilia Ema and Abril Gutiérrez sent
a letter to the Cuban people in which they declare
themselves against the Mexican government’s attitude.
"These decisions confirm the authoritarianism, the
incapacity and the falsity with which the Fox
government has acted before the Mexican people, and
now, before our brothers and sisters, the Cuban
people, exposing to the world its policy of
submission and sell out to U.S. interests, and its
betrayal of Mexico."
" ‘I didn’t vote for fox’ should be
the T-shirt that we dignified and intelligent
Mexicans will inexorably have to wear (...) Cuba
will always be, as it has been since the triumph of
the Revolution, an example of dignity and of
intelligence for our American peoples." This is the
judgement of Carmen Simón.
Peru is another country from which
people wrote to us during the last few days.
Alfonso Rojas, from the port of
Chimbote, expresses his solidarity with our
government and people in face of "the continuing
aggressiveness of U.S. imperialism." Raúl Chacón
Díaz also wrote in, commenting, "President Fidel
Castro had the valor to tell the truth to the
imperialist puppet, Alejandro Toledo...All I want to
do is to say to you, continue with your policy of
social justice for humanity and don’t retreat."
