Kerry’s wife supports Cubans
protesting in Miami against new restrictions
•
MIAMI, June (DPA)—Cubans who reside here have
rejected the ban on sending items to their families
in Cuba and have received the support of Teresa
Heinz Kerry, wife of Democratic presidential
candidate John Kerry.
The
Miami media reported that Washington has announced a
list of articles that Cubans in the United States
will no longer be able to send to their relatives,
including shoes, clothing and toiletries. One of the
most severe measures is that removing annual family
trips, which now may only be taken every three
years, and for only two weeks.
Teresa Heinz Kerry, who is in Miami, displayed
solidarity with the Cubans protesting against the
restrictions and said that her husband does not
agree with the measures against Cuba because “they
are ineffective.”
The
Univisión network’s Channel 23 carried out a survey
in which 68% of those polled said that they were
against the ban on sending certain articles to Cuba,
versus 32% that said they approved. Unemployment
could go up in southern Florida due to the eventual
closing of businesses dedicated to sending packages
to the island, and the factories that produce them,
Channel 23 reported.
SIGNATURES COLLECTED IN MIAMI AGAINST BUSH’S
ANTI-CUBAN MEASURES
A
family rights committee in Miami has initiated a
campaign to collect signatures to send to the U.S.
government – a sign of the discontent over the new
measures restricting travel to Cuba.
Notimex reported that the Family Rights Committee, a
coalition of anti-blockade groups that emerged on
May 20, announced that it intends to send a message
to Washington on the unpopularity of the measures,
which attack “family unity.”
In what is considered the beginning of a process of
rejection of the regulations, last weekend hundreds
of members of the Cuban community organized two
protests in Miami to express their discontent.
