NOAM Chomsky, the distinguished U.S.
political scientist and professor at the
Massachusetts Technological Institute, exposed the
reactionary policy of George W. Bush’s government
during a master conference entitled "Dilemmas of
domination" at the 25th Assembly of the Latin
American Social Science Council (CLACSO).
Chomsky,
in the presence of President Fidel Castro, made
reference to the U.S. government’s manipulation of
the population so as to be able to unleash the
aggression on and subsequent occupation of Iraq, on
the basis that an oft-repeated lie becomes a truth.
The eminent U.S. academic
highlighted all the steps taken by Washington to
achieve its unipolar domination of the planet, not
just by adopting so-called preemptive aggressions
arbitrarily directed anywhere within the Third
World, but also with connected actions such as
abandoning principles related to a peaceful cosmic
space, rejecting a treaty to ban biological weapons,
failing to sign the Kyoto Protocol and other
endeavors of that nature.
The national security strategy
adopted by Bush has sent a shudder throughout the
world, he said, and articles have been published in
respected newspapers discussing the danger the world
is facing in terms of weapons of mass destruction.
The academic commented that there
were warnings prior to the war in Iraq that it would
lead to an increase of terrorism, as the weak could
resort to using WMDs and violence, but the United
States took no notice.
Part of the government’s plan was
also to reduce taxes and increase military spending
at the cost of swelling the fiscal deficit and
reducing budgets assigned to social programs. He
added that we should not forget that manipulation of
public opinion was something that occurred during
the 12 years of the Reagan and Bush Sr.
administrations.
