Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, first Vice President of the Councils of States and Ministers, and Presidential advisor José Ramón Fernández welcomed a group of returning champions at Havana’s José Martí International Airport on Sunday evening, November 23, including swimmers and gymnasts, as well as members of the country’s baseball and softball teams.

“We went to do the best we could. Some of us won, others didn’t, but the efforts of all were evident. We dedicate this victory to the people, we know what they were expecting,” emphasized Alfredo Despaigne, a member of Cuba’s gold medal baseball team, while expressing the delegation’s appreciation for the warm welcome.

Gymnast Manrique Larduet, winner of multiple medals in the regional competition commented to Granma that his accomplishments reflected a year of hard work, saying, “I was completely confident that medals could be won, and now I feel proud, because it was up to me to recover the brilliance gymnastics had lost.”
